Normcore: Most Googled Trend of 2014

Google has revealed its “A Year in Search” annual list this Tuesday, where it turns out, the most Googled fashion trend in 2014 was the very puzzling Normcore. I’m sure most people where not googling it to get ideas for outfits but to actually understand what on earth that trend was about. Gap used it in it’s amazingly simple but cool “Dress Normal” campaign, Jerry Seinfeld even became a fashion icon, and jeans and a t-shirt came back to being the trendiest outfit.

The agency K-Hole, which created the name, explained that no one was actually getting it right. It was about “a way of being that prioritizes self-identification over self-differentiation.” Finding a community. But no one really listened and it became what people wanted it to be: dressing simple made cool. Let’s see how long this lasts.

Derrick Rose “I can’t breathe.”

What’s fashionable is all of us, including athletes with a social consciousness, in addition to just negotiating for multi million dollar contracts. We, and I assume, most Chicago Bull fans are proud of Derrick Rose for wearing a black T-shirt saying “I can’t breathe” (echoing the words of Eric Garner in his death in a chokehold by police) to warm ups last Saturday. The usually quiet Rose eloquently peached on the need for patience and understanding for blacks and whites. He stated the need to convey a message now that he is the father of a son & having grown up in Englewood. It took great courage to voice his opinion whether you agree or not. Derrick Rose we love your STYLE.

I can't breathe

Chicago Styled: Exhibition at the History Museum

The History Museum of Chicago has featured several exhibits on fashion over the years, but this last one tells the story of how the Magnificent Mile came to be what it is today. Featuring 26 ensembles from the Museum’s costume collection, “Each piece featured tells a greater Chicago story,” says curator of costume Petra Slinkard. Dating back to the 1950′s up to the 1990′s, every piece is connected to North Michigan Avenue and how it became the fabulous world-known fashion destination. Designs by Chanel, Yohji Yamamto, Karl Lagerfeld for Chloé, Courréges, Geoffrey Beene and Thierry Mugler were selected carefully to tell the story of the famed avenue.

Slinkard said in September, “Each dress has its capsule story. For instance, when Versace opened on Oak Street in 1986, he himself came to Chicago to open the boutique and during his visit he did a fashion show at the Field Museum. He donated nine pieces to the Chicago History Costume Collection, pieces from his Klimt collection.” We are very excited to see how this exhibition comes together and give the world just a little taste of our amazing stylish city.

Sophie Simmons Launches New Line: Clothing for All Sizes

The 22 year old daughter of Kiss’ Gene Simmons and former model Shannon Tweed has developed a clothing line that is fit for “all sizes” for The Style Club. The clothes are based around a New Year’s Eve theme and feature items such as fun, flirty dresses.  Sophie grew up in front of the cameras while her family’s reality TV show was being filmed, and felt as though her body was always being criticized.  The new clothing line does not discriminate thin and does not discriminate plus size.  Sophie, being a size 8 herself, has difficulty finding clothing that fits properly and is comfortable for her figure.  Another fun plus to the line? Each garment is named after a strong, powerful woman in today’s society or from history.  For example, you can own the “Oprah open back sweater” or pieces for Rosa Parks, Nancy Reagan and even Taylor Swift.  There is truly something for everyone.  The inspiration behind the line is “rocker meets conservative” and is priced from $25 to $115.  Not only do we adore the message, but we adore these clothes! Here are some of our favorites:

Kate Middleton Fashion: Royal Visit to NYC

Ever since the gorgeous Duchess of Cambridge came into the spotlight, she has been a style icon.  From her chic suits to her glamorous gowns, she has never missed a beat; even while being pregnant.  The royal beauty is pregnant with her second baby, and is currently vacationing in New York City.  When Kate touched down at JFK, she was wearing a burgundy Seraphine coat over a dress with a warm knit scarf to beat the chill.  Before heading to an exclusive gathering, the Duchess changed into a black, mid-length lace dress from Beulah London, and paired it with classic black Stuart Weitzman pumps.  Last night, the royals attended the Cavaliers basketball game, where Kate donned a tweed peacoat, concealing the “royal bump.” We have always been a fan of her simple, classic taste, and we are excited to have the royal couple in NYC!

Man Up Monday: GQ Men of the Year

On Thursday night, some of the most influential, funny and handsome men (and women) reunited in LA for GQ’s annual Men of the Year party. We might love them or hate them at times, but we have to admit, they made a hell of a good year this 2014. Chris Pratt, Steve Carell, Michael Sam, Dave Chappelle, Woodley and Elgort each got their own December covers for “Men of the Year”.

Steve Carell

Villain of the Year, Steve Carell (for Foxcatcher) said during his interview with GQ, ”I never thought of myself as funny. I don’t feel like I’m great at cocktail conversations. I don’t hold court. I don’t take up a lot of space. I’m not the life of the party. I’m not the guy telling jokes. And I never was.” And still, there are few men who have made us laugh more than he has over the years, but it looks like this time, laughter is not what he’s after.

Chris Pratt

As for Superhero of the Year, Chris Pratt, must have made a hell of an audition to impress  Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn ”I thought it was an insane idea to cast the fat guy from Parks and Rec as the lead of our superhero movie,” says  Gunn. “I didn’t really even want to see him.” and after blowing him away, ”I thought, Well, hell, he’s overweight, but if that means we have the world’s first overweight superhero, I’m okay with it.” Let’s go for an overweight heroin 2015! (yeah, right!)

Dave Chappelle

Comedian Dave Chappelle earned Comeback of the Year. Let’s hope he stays for real this time.

Ansel Elgort

The Fault in Our Stars, Ansel Elgort won Breakthrough of the Year, and he doesn’t seem worried about what’s next, “…because I just think of my career as, like, having sixty years ahead of me.”

Jimmy lovine

Jimmy lovine got his long-awaited Icon of the Year after many achievements like being co-founder of Interscope Records and creating Beats earphones.
